Alfred (Pete) Forrest 1944

Before the war I was a keen footballer and played amateur football and played for my works and also when I was a boy I played for Sheffield boys.
During the war to take our minds off the fighting and during our R & R we played football. One of these games I played in Rome's national football stadium.

Later on while I was serving in Austria. A game was arranged where our team captianed by Les Pendlebury played against Sir Tom Finney's team. Any body could come to watch the match and the addmission charge was an apple, orange, chocolate or any food items which was later distributed amongst the local children.
We lost the game 4-3. Sir Tom scored the fourth goal to win the match. If memory serves me right, I scored the hat-trick but was still not enough to beat the skills of Sir Tom snd his team of professional players both past and present.

I will alway remember this as one of the highlights of my experience in the war as I have both good and bad memories, these football matches kept us all sane.

Message 1 - Football in WW11

Posted on: 13 October 2005 by Trooper Tom Canning - WW2 Site Helper

Alf - Football not only kept us sane but gave us a few laughs as well.
While with "B" squadron of the 16th/5th Lancers at Strassburg in Steirmark - we laid out a pitch and invited the locals to play. We beat them quite easily and in the mess after the game, we invited them to play the following week. This was acepted and we were rubbing our hands at the thought of another easy victory before we would tackle the other Squadrons.
We were clobbered 6-1 - the villagers were not all that stupid as they had telephoned Klagenfurt during the week and obtained the services of three professionals !
Another time in Bone, North Africa we shared a pitch with the local herd of camels who had to be cleared before we could play. One day a young camel had been hit by a stone during this clearance and so the youngster obviously told it's Mother - who on seeing Charlie Bailey come down the hill to the pitch gave chase - until she got fed up - Charlie wasn't fit to play after that run !
At Barnard Castle in the training regt we had Jimmy Gordon of Middlesbrough, and Bobby Combe of Hibernians who also played for Scotland after the war.
great days
cheers
