When I was a nurse in a city liberated by a Welsh regiment,I often wondered how my family was doing. They lived in a city close to the german border in the southern most part of Holland. My mother, her sister- in -law and my youngest sister lived in a house close to a german airfield. They had taken in a family of 3,a Jesuit priest and a Jesuit brother. It would have meant instant execution if the germans had found out.In the diningroom they had folded back the carpet under the diningroom table and made an underground refuge area for the men.The whole neighbourhood was more or less involved with the underground.Young kids warned my mother if a razzia by the "Gr眉nen "was underway,so they could hide the men.My aunt spoke fluid german, having lived her whole life in that city.(the local dialects of that city and the city across the border were about the same). One day the Gr眉ne Polizei knocked on the door.My aunt opened the door and started to yell at them in fluid german:How did they dare to bother her etc. This was a way of speaking they were used to .They probably thought that germans lived there. They apologized and disappeared.Narrow escape.!The men were not hidden yet!! under the diningroom table.
