I lived in London throughout the war. When I left school, I got a job making aircraft parts. I also joined the ATC. I suppose you just lived from day to day then.

When I was 17录 I volunteered for the RAF. As was the system at the time, they deferred my service until I was 18. However, before I got that far, they decided in 1944 that I was surplus to requirements and I was made redundant! They actually gave me a choice. I could either join the army, or could go to work down the coal mine.

I opted for the army, and eventually found myself in India with the Royal Horse Artillery. We had large guns fitted to a tank chassis, and we had to take them up to the North West Frontier to see how well they worked. I can remember it was hard going, and that they did about 陆 mile a gallon!
