I was given a job in the Officers鈥 Mess. We were told to get the place tidied up as there were some important people coming to dinner. We found out later in the day that it was in fact General Montgomery and some other high-ranking officers. The PMC who is the officer in chrage of the mess, had heard from the lads that I was the best scrounger in the Company so he sent for me to see if I could scrounge something special for the dinner. He said I should take the cook with me and try to see what we could get.

The cook and I borrowed one the jeeps and went off. We had travelled about three miles into the desert when we came to a big white house, and painted on the wall in big letters was 鈥渙ut of bounds to all Allied Forces鈥. Even so, the cook and I went and knocked at the door and within a few minutes an old man came to the door and asked what we wanted. We asked him if he had any chickens to sell us and he invited us into the house. He said he would not be long and he would go to see what he had. I will never forget what we saw in that house. There was a big room and in the middle of the room there was a large, highly polished table which was about 20鈥 long by about 4鈥 wide. Around this table sat a dozen naked women; none of them had a stitch of clothing on. The cook and I stood there with our eyes nearly popping out. After a while th eold man came back with a dosen chickens tucked under his arms. We sat there for a few minutes bartering with him and eventually came to some arrangements and we showed him the bag of tea we had with us. He agreed to take the bag of tea for the chickens and he also offered two of the women sitting at the table to come with us as servants. We told him we could not do that since the army would not allow it and we left it at that.

We got back to our camp about an hour later and reported straight to the PMC and showed him what we had got. We explained how we had got them and about the two women the old man had offered us be had refused. The PMC complimented us and also said we should have brought the women with us and he started to laugh. At 7 o鈥檆lock that night Gen. Montgomery and the other High Ranking Officers arrived for dinner. After they had finished their meal, Gen. Montgomery, accompanied by the PMC came in to what was the cook-house and thanked everybody for their efforts and the cook for serving an excellent dinner. He shook hands with everybody
