This is Mike Hubbard’s story: it has been added by Pauline Colcutt (on behalf of the Fernhurst Centre), with permission from the author who understands the terms and conditions of adding his story to the website.

This poem was written in 1943 by my grandfather who was the village baker at Lickfold and known as Winkle Ayling the Bun King - his fame spread well beyond Lickfold. For many years I was the village postman and known as The Singing Postman!

Ode to The Home Guard

Written by ‘Winkle Ayling’ ‘The Lickfold Bun King’ — 14 May 1943

It was just three years ago today
We all remember it well
Old Hitler thought he’d got us beat
But we had a different tale to tell.

Great Britain stood in danger
From the Bully from Berlin
Oh! How the Home Guard was founded
Why it even staggered him

With prongs and sticks and shot guns
There was John and Joe and Tom
Right through the bally country
The Home Guard was formed and strong

Old Hitler got to know it
Which made him rant and roar
Which only made us stronger
And even brought in more

It helped to save the country
Although some were old and bald
It put the wind up Hitler
For he was heard to say ‘Good Lord’

And now after three years
Firm as a rock we stand
Although we are on rations
We have the guts save our land.

THE END
