During the War my father worked at the Royal Infirmary on Durham Road, Sunderland, in the pathology laboratory.
Each of the technicians had to do fire watching
duty. When the air raid siren was sounded they went up on to the flat roof of the laboratory, complete with tin hat and gas mask.
Daddy was on duty the night that "Binns" - two impressive department stores situated on either side of Fawcett Street - were bombed. He told me that he saw the open parachutes coming down and each one had a basket hanging below it containing the incendiary bombs.
The stores burst into flames, lighting the night sky. It looked as though the whole of the town was being burned down.
Try to imagine the sight of the fires, the noise of the aeroplanes and the little anti-aircraft gun pop pop popping away.
Mrs R.P.Carlson,
Sunderland
