I had already left school. I remember the school children from my old school had to go and collect scrap iron to send to England because we were told that England needed iron for the war.
I remember they had a float with a band playing nice music and going round the island of Grenada collecting money to send to England for the war effort. On the float they had scout boys with a long bamboo rod with a pocket at the end of the rod and people would put whatever they can. They used to annouce the day and place when they would pass through and where they would stop. And people came to support the cause of the war.
During the war I worked in a grocery shop and in the middle of the war we had no rice or flour in the shop and most of all cooking salt. But I was fortunate as I always had salt in my house because in the shop where I worked we had barrel of salt beef and pig tails and when the barrel was empty there was salt at the bottom and we were allowed to take the salt. I remember when did get salt we had to sell it from the next building, with half a pound to one person. They had to queue from one end and go out in the next end.
I remember when the war was over there was a big celebration in the street and on the top floor of the police station, which I was glad to join in.
