I attended Bradden School, in the war years. We would be given half days off and sent to Farms to pick potatoes and vegetables. We would pick blackberries, for jam making and take them to "Sammy Greens" shop to be weighed.
I would go to my Grandparents at holiday time in Glen Maye and we would see the German planes, returning from bombing missions over the North of England and going over Northern Ireland.
Going into Douglas, on shopping outings we would see Prisoners of War, staying at Hutching Square. They were so trusted, the soldiers would give the prisoners the rifles to carry as they went into town.
50 years later a German ex-prisoner, on holiday in Douglas, said on interview with Manx Radio, the time spent here in the war years, were the happiest of his life.
