I served with the Royal Signals and was responsible for the local Radio Station, giving news to the troops etc… We were first based on a Race Course at ‘Stokel’, just outside of Brussels and I remember the building in the city centre with the arches and the statue of the lady in the chariot on the top. Nowadays the politicians tend to stand outside this building when they give interviews on the television.
Men used to come and beg for food at the Army Camp because they were very short of food.
There was a French jockey who I became friendly with called Louis Marcelis. We then moved to a Race Course in Paris and we had to carry all the equipment which was heavy and cumbersome, not like the light weight equipment of today.
