I served in the infantry (Durham Light Infantry) during the war. I landed in Normandy near Arromanches on D+10 and served with the regiment in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. We were about 15 miles short of the Danish frontier when a Don R. drove alongside and told us the war was over!
As he drove off I noticed a house about 500 yards away, in complete drkness of course! I hammered on the front door and when a German fellow opened it I informed him, "Das Krieg ist kaput!", ie. "the war is over". Anyway, he came back with two bottles of wine and we clunked glasses together and wished each other all the best!
I then got the launch mortar from the back of the carrier and fired off about ten flares high up in the sky!
The serjeant major came running up to tell me off, but I told him to shut up and piss off!
