Secret location:
It was very difficult, even with coupons, to get any choice of material, but I managed to make a new dress. I was singing in a show for Canadian Legion (like ENSA). The audience was most appreciative. Cheering and applauding! Later one of the girls told me that in the stage lighting my dress became transparent and I looked completely naked!
London:
In 1943, my boyfriend was a doctor and I was a Red Cross nurse. We were having dinner at a restaurant in the West End. Suddenly there was a terrific explosion nearby. We both rushed out to see if we could help. While pulling at the rubble, a figure at my left elbow said: 鈥淲ell done.鈥 Looking up I recognised immediately, it was Sir Winston Churchill, resplendent in Air Force uniform.
Hertfordshire:
My two young sisters were evacuated from school to a farm just outside Buntingford (Hertfordshire). My parents and I used to visit them at weekends. One Saturday afternoon we were taking a walk together across fields. We heard planes and recognised that they were German Messerschmitts, possibly returning from a sortie over London. We heard machine gun fire and jumped into a ditch at the realisation that they were shooting at us. There was no other target and no other person in the vicinity.
