I was 20 years old, training as a nurse in Rotherham. I was working, one night during blackout, when the siren went off. Nurses on day duty would take babies and children down to the basement when the sirens went off but if you were on night duty you stayed with your patients. Anyway, I put on my helmet because of the sirens. All the patients were trying to get to sleep so we kept the light low, focused on our desks, whilst we (the other nurse on duty and I) did paperwork and wrote up lectures. I was whispering with my colleague but we had to keep quiet as the patients were sleeping. Everytime we leaned in to whisper to one another though, our helmets would bang together. When we leaned our heads back to laugh our helmets came right off and made a fantastic crash on the floor! Everybody woke up, wondering what had just happened, and laughed!
