When I was eighteen I joined the Army (ATS). I was sent to do three weeks training. Hundreds of girls were put onto trains and sent to a training centre. They were each sent to different places and I was sent to Leen Hee (?) .
Afterwards I was sent to Exeter-The Higher Barracks. Here I trained about five hundred girls every month, and got my first stripe. I found it hard at first because I was away from home a lot, but I got used to it. In training we used to do drill and we practised in the gas chambers where we learnt about the different gases.
I then went on a course to The Wintington Barracks. I did a course here and achieved my second stripe.
When I got my second stripe I was sent on another course to Bovington Camp. Here I became an admin corporal. In this job I did a lot of office work, but my main job was working in the food store. In the food store I had to collect all the food from the delivery trucks, and dish it out to the different people, like the sergeants and officers messes. When I wasn鈥檛 doing this I was doing my admin job. I stayed at Bovington until the end of the war.
I was in the Army for about a year and during this time I met my husband.
