Despite rationing my Grandad says they always had enough to eat, and enough beer for the pub they ran. If meat was wanted then people would just kill a pig or a chicken. They also grew their own vegetables which gave them a bit more variety.
They also owned a smallholding and my Grandad recalls seeing German POW's driven by truck to work on the larger farms in the area.
