The most memorable memory for me was on my sixth birthday, when I had a party for twelve friends. Shortly before tea the air raid siren sounded and my mother dropped the tea-caddy and shepherded the children into the air raid shelter. To keep the children鈥檚 attention away from the air raid she produced a great treat, a box of biscuits that she saved from pre-war. When the all clear sounded we filed back to the dining-room where we found the table as we had left it, the candles upright on the cake but the flat roof of the dining-room had lifted and we could see daylight on two sides. A plane had been shot down about two hundred metres away.
