During the early part of WW2 my family lived in the Weelsby Hall cottage to the west of Weelsby Hall drive. My grandfather lived in the cottage on the east side of the drive. (The hall is now called the Slight Central Education Centre on Weelsby Road in Grimsby).

To the east, next door used to be the Hewitts large hall and was being used as a hospital. During an air raid my grandfather got us out of the air raid shelter and in the sky were a lot of lights. They were incendiary bombs over the hospital and as a result that hospital is no longer there. To the rear of the west cottage was a yard surrounded by buildings. At about 5pm the Slight's lorry driver parked his lorry and went to open the double gates. The lorry was on a slope and slipped forward, trapping the driver between the bar on the front of the lorry and the unlocked V shape of the double gates. Not knowing what to do I awaited instructions. "Fetch Mr Jordan" said the driver. Mr Jordan was my grandfather. Though the driver was trapped I do not think he was hurt since the angle of the partially opened gates stuck on the front of the cab left a big enough gap for him to be trapped but not crushed.
(I was only about 5 years old.)
