I was only a young boy at the time .
I was with a friend on peartree green
and we saw some aeroplanes flying up
the southampton water toward the docks .
the air raid sirens had not gone off at that time so we were not too worried about the planes but
then the planes started to drop their bombs
although i didnt see the bombs I could see the explosions in and around the dock area.
the anti-aircraft guns started to fire at the planes and then the sirens sounded and men from the factories started to come up the hill toward us and they put my friend andI into the airraid shelter.
I didnot know at the time that there was a large cold store in the docks but afterwards I heard that it burnt for 2 or 3 days.
