My brother was sent to Surry at the beginning of the war 1939,to a village called Bramley. My mother and I visited him.He was staying with an elderly couple,a Mr/Mrs Hubbard at the Old Tannery Cottages. Mrs Hubbard asked me if I would like to stay with them for a couple of weeks. Which I did ,this was 1940 and I would be about 10years old.I was then evacutated with them They had two spaniels a black one called Rufus and the other one was a golden colour called Lady.I was relocated to another couple when Mrs Hubbard suffered ill health.A Mr/Mrs Glew at Shalford. I returned home to London on my 12th birthday March 9th 1942.In September 1943 having passed the 13th plus I went to Lewisham Technical College for dressmaking. Miss Tazlar's class.Miss Daniel's I believe she was a jewess she was a schoolteacher of mine at the Shalford school. She asked me if ever I got the chance to sit the 13+for dressmaking to do so .She had let me embrodier some cushion cover's for her during sewing lessen's. While still at the Tannery Cottage's a large number of Wall's stop me and buy one bicycle's were stored. There was a very large pit where they used to tan the animal hide's. Mr Hubbard grew a lot of vegetable's as he had a very large garden ,and I remember there being a apple tree in the garden which I used to sit under and knit doll's clothes. Happy Days there was a bridge nearby and a field with a horse in ,which led to a shop or shops where I used to go for messages for Mrs Hubbard. The horse who was kept in the field took a packet of tea out of the basket I used to carry and took a bite out of it ,which Itook home minus some of the tea. I wouldn't have liked to have missed these episodes of my life . Village life is great'everybody knows everyone in the village Comradeship during the war was great. We could do with some of it now To much hustle and bustle no time for others. How sad please come back ,During the war we never knew if there would be a tomorrow .But then we still don't do we .
