This story was submitted to the Peoples War site by Betty Lowe was 5 years old and lived near Edge Hill Station they were evacuated to a hall in Shrewsbury by train. Then they were all billeted out and were given a supply of Cadburys chocolate, tin of corned beef and a tin of condensed milk all in little brown carrier bag. Betty vaguely remembers been taken by bus to a house were they to stay with Aunty Minn who also had her own daughter called Maureen. They stayed there for about 3 weeks because the family was separated and everyone was terribly homesick. She also remembers playing with Maureen in the garden that had a lily pond and Maureen feel and Betty got the blame, this is one of her fond memories. They carried life on in Shrewsbury and attended school, their mum then came to collect them but had to go a place that looked a castle and get permission to bring them home she evens what she was wearing that day which was; bottle green coat with a pixie hood they all had their gas masks with their label on them on this was their destination were they were to be sent. So after a lot of difficulty and persuasion she was then allowed to take them and until this day the feeling of being homesick has never worn off. When they came they attended St Catherine鈥檚 protestant school in Overbury Street. When the bombs started they were sent to local houses to have their lessons while sitting there, they could hear the guns going off and they were told hide under great big metal tables as the air aid shelters were not finished. While the air raids were on they used to try and amuse themselves by performing little concerts and use the table as their stage. Betty remembers one time a bomb must have gone off very nearby because when it landed the house shook and soot fell everywhere and everyone covered in soot even her little sister who was six weeks old.
