Our parents did not want us evacuated so we lived in Bromley through most of the war.
when boming took place we used the public shelters but early in 1944 we were provided with a Morrison shelter witch was erected in a downstars room one night we were all in the shelter when a doodlebug landed (we were told afterwards that it hit the conker tree at the bottem of our garden.)There was no noise just a whoosh and the house calapsed we were traped underneath rubble. Fortunatly our father had been to the toilet and had not put back properly one of the sides so we were able to scramble free. Our dog usedto sleep in the kitchen and our mother called her and despite the rubble she came to us uninjured.
by thi time rescuers were working at the front of the house who finnaly found us when we were tacken by ambulance to tend to our injuries fred had half his ear hanging off and tom had shrapnel in his chest close to his heart.our elder brother Jim had multiple fragments of glass in his fce and arms. theese remaned for many years as they came to the surface and able to pick them out,one of our vivid memories is when we were rescuednd were cared over the shoulders of the rescues across a scene of dverstation to the ambulance.
We lost every thing apart from a canteen of cutlery and two framed photographs.
after hospitalization our parents reluctantly agreed that we woulg be evacuated whilst they sorted out somewhere to live and replacment furnitre and clothing. We were away for three months only and then returned to live in Bromley for the rest of the war.
we lost contact with all ourfriends and infact the road where we had lived was thn was never rebuilt and disappeared from street maps.
