My Nana was evacuated to Devon and she helped around the farm, she absolutely loved it there. My Grandad wasn't evacuated. One of my Grandad's bad experiences was when tiles fell off roofs near his head. My Nana's was when she came back from Devon and there were still doodlebugs flying (these are a noisy type of bomb).

My Nana and Grandad didn't help to build an Anderson shelter but my Nana thought that being inside it was cold and damp, although my Grandad thought it was a bit like an adventure. The longest time my Nana and Grandad were in the Anderson shelter was overnight but also occasionally in the daytime. In the air raid shelter, my Grandad normally tried to get to sleep but otherwise he would read a book. My Nana either drew, read books or tried to get to sleep. Once when she was in the air raid shelter, she was sick all over her Mum. when my Nana was out of the air raid shelter she used to play on the swings.

When my Grandad was at school one day, the air raid siren went off and they had to go under tables or in the corridors but my Nana didn't go to school because she was too young.

My Grandad thought that rationing wasn't pleasant. They had to save up their coupons for food and grew things in the garden. The food he missed the most was sweets and fruit. My Nana thought rationing was horrible, her Mum couldn't cook the things she normally cooked. The food my Nana missed most was sweets.

One of the awful things my Nana said was when she woke up and found houses were missing which had been bombed. My Grandad said that when his Mum was hanging washing on the line one day, there was a plane flying past and she said, "Oh don't worry it will be one of ours", and then my Grandad said, "Well, how come it has a black cross on it", and his mum grabbed him by the hand and ran into the shelter.

My Nana and Grandad only wore a gas mask when they were being taught how to put them on. My Nana's gas mask was "mickey mouse" and was red at the top and blue at the bottom.

In the War, my Nana's family did war work and her Dad was a bus driver. Her friends were evacuated as well.

When the War ended, to celebrate my Nana and Grandad went to street parties with snacks and dancing.

Overall the thing that my Nana and Grandad were most scared of in wartime was getting killed by the Germans.
