Having passed a Civil Service Examination I went to work at the War Office. I worked very long hours including Saturdays, and I remember going to work by bus. I often went to eat my lunch at a park nearby and on numerous occassions I saw Winston Churchill walking there with some of his colleagues.
I remember my neighbours' house being bombed, and I recall spending nights in the Underground (air raid shelter). I remember that when the sirens went we would run with our bag of bedding (we always had a bag of bedding made up, just in case)to the air raid shelter, and then we would sleep wherever we found a suitable place.
During the war my family had an allotment and we all helped out there. We grew mainly vegetables, and I remember us making our own jams.
My father was a policeman, and during the war he was a member of the Home Guard.
