The British not only dropped parts of Sten-and Brenguns to the undergound people in Holland, but often very important persons. This is the story that had a terrible ending for 2 nurses.
One Sunday morning when we went to work we saw the street in front of our hospital crawling with SSguards, bayonette at the reeady. What was going on??We were stopperd one by one.We had to show our identity card, our passes that we were allowed on the street after curfew,Where did we work?Very "gr眉ndlich " these Gemans. When we got in the hospital, the place was strangely quiet. We finally found out what happened. The British had dropped a V.I.P. into Holland, the guy was wounded and captured by the Germans and transported to our hospital .He was put in a room on the second floor. It had a narrow window.2 guards with weapons were put outside his room. They weren't too worried:the guy was wounded. But that was their mistake.
2 Nurses on the nightshift-I am sure they were already working for the underground-
got their orders. At a certain time they had to drop a strong sleeping medicine in the coffee of the guards. When they knocked off,the underground put a ladder outside the window of the prisoner, put him on a stretcher and took him through the window to a separate gate close to the "Pavillion for Infectious Disaeases". There was a a kind of dirt path paralell to the fence. The people in that area were violently anti german. The Germans were absolutely forbidden to go through that area. There was also a caf茅; "The Mouse with the little Red eyes"'. I wouldn't be surprised if the underground hid him there till further transportation was made.He made it out alive we heard later. The 2 nurses were picked up by the Gestapo and transported to a concentration camp in Vught. We knew them well, they were in our class, third year students also.I met one of them in the hospital's ophtalmology clinic,.Some one told me :"Go quickly and you can see her.I did ,but could only exchange a few words.Later we heard that the other nurse :D.O. had died of pneumonia.Did she or what caused her death??
