My sister, Pauline, and I were evacuted to Newcastle-under-Lyme in 1943.
I remember being processed through various handling authorities;being bathed in sulphurous baths, experiencing hot water from a tap for the first time. And finally being encoached to Newcastle-under-Lyme.
We were lined up and inspected by a group of strange people who spoke with strange accents.
It seemed that my sister and I were left until last. Finally a large woman took us both.
It was an unhappy union - we ate little;didn't receive the shoes that had been claimed for.
I remember searching dustbins for food - I distinctly remember finding some half eaten meat pies, covered with a layer of green mould, which we happily ate.
Finally my evacuation ended when I wrote to my mother who came and collected us and took us to Northampton - which is another story!
