My name is Matthew Maxey, I am a 大象传媒 GMR actiondesk volunteer, taking the story of Pamela Brown. It has been added to the site with her permission.
During the Blitz on London, I lived on the periphery. My family, parents and sister all slept in one room downstairs. For many nights, the siren would go and my sister and I rushed out the air raid shelter in the garden.
My father was an air raid warden, so was rarely in the shelter. Sometimes, we had to dodge shrapnel, as the guns were blaring out.
In the shelter, my sister and I slept on bunkbeds, and my poor mother had to sit up all the time.
The light was poor, so we could do little else but sleep and listen to stories that were read to us. The guns were so loud and near that it was often very frightening.
We were thankful for the shelter, as various bombs landed in our street. A landmine fell descending on a parachute, which hung in a tree. A small bomb dropped in a neighbour's garden and incendiary bombs hit some of the houses nearby.
Sometimes we came up from the shelter to find our windows had been smashed in the attack. We would look across to London to see the skies burning an orange colour from the fires.
