I was 4 years of age when the war began.
Whilst the war was on I used to play games such as whip and top and we had a scooter. I will never forget the wooden car that my dad built for me and my sister to play on this was a car to remember! Also at home, we had a nanny goat as a pet.
I can remember that I used to wear a pair of clogs and when the neighbours heard me coming they used to laugh.
Dad used to be in the RAF and when he was away my mum use to look after us. Whilst he was away we all used to miss him very much and could not wait for him to come home on leave. Whilst away with the RAF, I can remember that my Dad had his back smashed, and this resulted in him wearing a plastic jacket for six months.
I can remember the buzz bombs and we were living in Leicester, near Jones and Shipman (they used to make the bombs and ammunition). All we could hear was the buzzing from the bomb when it went by, and we were told that when we could no longer hear the buzzing we were to go and hide, as this meant that a bomb was about to drop.
A bomb did drop in a school play ground in Wigston, but luckily no one was hurt as it happened at night time. The headmaster of the school kept the bomb for a souvenir. I can remember the air raid sirens and also the black outs, and my mum would cover the windows with our dark blankets.
