鈥淚 remember writing letters to my father on large sheets of paper, but by the time they reached him, they had been photocopied and made very small, as were the letters that we received from him.
We had an Anderson or Morrison shelter in the dinning room, a large cage type thing which my sister and I slept in at night, it had a sort of grill on the side and we used to jump and dance on it and it shook!!
I remember the air raid warden coming to check and see if we were alright. My mother watching the search lights from her bedroom window and listening for the Doodle bugs, if they stopped over head you knew you were ok, but if you could hear them you then wondered where they would drop.
The house next door but one was flattened and a man killed whilst riding his bike, and after that my sister and I were sent to live with my grandfather at Sand Hurst, where we were totally unaware of the war.
My father was not recognisable on his return home; he had very tanned leathery skin. Before enlisting he had been employed by the Midland Bank and his job was kept open for him, he was very lucky to have a job to come back to鈥.
