Mrs Frances McNally
Remembers during the ‘May Blitz’ their house was bomb damaged leaving no gas, electricity or water so the family consisting of Grandfather, Grandmother, brother John, cousin Monica and herself had to walk from Kirkdale to Fazackerley. She recalls having to carry the family pet (‘Tom’a very large cat) in a shopping bag with it’s head sticking out of the zip end, and it yowled the whole way as it had shrapnel in it’s paw and was bad tempered anyway. They arrived at their destination to find no milk or bread in the house and Grandma was too proud to borrow from neighbours so they had to wait till next day to have any milk. Grandmother bathed the cat’s paw with germolene in hot water, which upset him at the time but seemed to work as he lived to a ripe old age.
The same lady also remembers being at the allotment with her brother and Grandfather when a ‘dogfight’ ensued overhead, fearing they might be shot their Grandfather hid them in the strawberry patch (covered in straw) until our plane had won the fight and chased the enemy away.
