Battle of Caen

One of the last big battles of the war.
Expected to be captured second day, instead took about two weeks.
Massive concentration of guns, day and night firing and being fired at.
Air battles, New Zealand pilot crash landed nearby, thought he was over enemy land, very grateful he saw us, then German was shot down, he started firing his Luger, soon despatched. No 2 gun sight were shelled constantly, some were in a bad way.
Late one night trucks passed by full of Polish troops, killed by Ameriucan planes by mistake.
The civilians had a terrible time, many casualties, such devestation in the town, we had to wait gfor the R.E.bulldozers before we could get through
