My formal dress
My first experience of War was in Adrano in Sicily.
I was a wireless operator in the 49th Light Ack Ack Regiment who were in the 78th British Infantry Division.
To my amazement we were surrounded by dead bodies, all of whom had turned black. I was also surprised to find that the Infantry troops were going in and out of shops and houses with all sorts of goods in their hands.
As this was happening we were being shelled and our officer told us that as it was so accurate they had to be using the church tower as an OP (observation post). The same officer directed one of the guns to fire at the church. This took the top of the church right off and the shelling first stopped and then, when it re-started , was spasmodic and less accurate.
All of this was like watching a film taking place as it was all so unreal.
