I was born in Belgium. In 1939, in Moorsele, the British were driven back by the Germans after only a few days. My memory is of a German soldier, with a gun to my back, using me as a human shield. I had to show him around a house. I even had to open wardrobes to ensure there were no Britsh soldiers in the house. He said, "are you frightened of me", and I replied, "I am not frightened of you, I am frightened of your gun".

Message 1 - Belgium 1939

Madeliene

Belgium was at peace in 1939, having declared that it was a neutral country; the Germans invaded it on 10 May 1940. It was the Belgian army that was driven back to Moorsele within a few hours of the invasion, by nightfall on the 10th. There was no British army in Belgium to be driven back before that, in fact the 3rd Division went up to face the advancing Germans in the vicinity of Moorsele but then had to fall back as they crossed the Canal Line. The German in your story was probably looking for Belgian soldiers, not British.

Regards,

Peter
