Viola was the youngest child of a family of six. She lived in a small cottage in the country with no electric light or running water. She was eight years old when the war began and was used to living in a quiet country village. Suddenly the village was full of soldiers living in barracks erected opposite her cottage.

These soldiers had large guns ready to be used to protect the Ammunition Factory, which had been built fairly close to the village.

Viola remembers the soldiers using the family well for their water, but before they could use it someone from the Army needed to test the water. The water was pure and the Army used the well along side the family.
