When I was a child, I lived in Gorton, Manchester, and I went to school at Gorton Monastery. The School was located in an industrial area, which was a target for German bombers. Because of this, my younger brother, Tony, and I had to be evacuated to a safer spot in Macclesfield, so that we could receive an education.
We stayed with a Mr and Mrs Imber, who had no children of their own and they treated me and my bother as if we were part of their family. We stayed for about twelve months. The school we attended was St. Alban's Macclesfield - lessons were held mornings one week, afternoons the next.
We remained friendly with Mr and Mrs Imber until they passed away. We exchanged Christmas and Birthdays cards and I always sent Mrs Imber a Mother's Day card - after all we were really her children! Mr and Mrs Imber attended my wedding when I got married in 1950.
The need to be evcuated brought a lasting lifelong friendship which I really valued.
