On D-Day+3, my father in law was sent out to France. He was in charge of maintaining a mobile bank. This carried the money which which would be needed for the soldiers to spend when they came for rest and recouperation. They could spend this both at the NAAFI and also in the local area.
The mobile bank had 4,750,000 francs or 拢22,750.
Whilst the bank was being offloaded from the ship, it was involved in an unfortunate collision... The consequence was a broken headlamp, with words to the effect of "Oi, you just broke my lamp!!!" In reply, the dock assistant shouted "Well, there is a war going on, you know!" "Yeah, but I've only got one spare!"
