I remember my father telling me about the times he was on call at the submarine depot in Valletta in Malta. On the harbour wall there is an eye carved in stone which was about 6 feet high and it faces the entrance to the port. It was said to look after the returning sailors who protected the island of Malta. On enight he had a dream that his submarine went down with all hands. He said he saw it clearly and the eye followed the sub out of the harbour and that there was a huge tear falling into the water from this stone eye. Two days later, he was asked if he would be stand in CPO officer of the watch, on shore patrol, since the CPO of the day before had taken sick. That day, the submarine HMS Unbeaten went out on patrol in the Mediterranean without him on board and it went down just outside the Maltese harbour. They think it hit a mine and sank with all hands. Dad told me he shed many tears over the sad loss of his pals, but he knew from that day on that he would see the end of the war out safely.
