Just a short excerpt from my diary of one ship a Destroyer the name of which I will not disclose to save the families of those
who lost loved one's any distress.
This was the second day out of Alexandria
in the convoy "Vigorous" heading for MALTA
12thJune 1942,after a first day of continued
attacks by dive bombers and a sunset torpedo
bomber attack we were heading back to the
convoy after leaving it during the night to
intercept units of the Italian Fleet who were on there way to intercept our convoy'
but we received orders to return to the convoy so here we are.
We arrive back at the convoy with flare's
coming down and now being attacked by high
level bomber's as well as E'boats, came the morning and in came the torpedo bombers and
almost at the same time the dive bombers
screaming down in bigger numbers this time
bomb's all over the place saw some ships hit
and watched as one bomber came round our stern where H.M.S.? was and we opoen'ed up
at the same time as she did when the plane went into it's dive and H.M.S ? was giving it all she'd got'then we saw that the plane
had been hit and it just kept on diving straight onto H.M.S.? stern and I saw one
huge flash and a terrific explosion and after a few minute's we dropped astern to
were she had been to pick up any survivor's
but there was nothing just a lot of floating
debris' what a terrible ending.
