I served in the NAAFI for about 15 months, first at Storrington in West Sussex, where I met Jomo Kenyatta, who lived there at the time. Next I moved to fourth Avenue in Hove, later on in Cromwell Road and finally finished at Second Avenue. I was ill and left and later on had to join the ATS.
My 鈥渃all up鈥 papers went astray and a policeman had to come to where I was. Apparently another girl in the area had the same thing happen, so it was a good laugh. I finally had to go to Guilford for my training and I think it was Ian Hay that came to our 鈥減assing out鈥 parade.
Next I went and trained as a wireless operator/telephonist. After that I had lots of moves (24 in two years 11 months). These included Bude, Abe forth, Neath, Peacehaven, Seaford, Ellesmere Post, Goxhill, Mumbles and Barton on Humber amongst others. I was for a time at RHQ at Seaford ad went out on sites as a telephonist, also officer鈥檚 batwoman, and kitchen assistant. I was mostly attached to the Royal Artillery, but at Neath, I was put to a unit attached to the Royal Corps of signals. We used to go for long walks in Wales and Cornwall. In Cornwall we bought some apples and then decided to go for a 400ft climb back to camp. It was really wonderful to see so much lovely scenery and be able to go to places like Liverpool, and walk on the pier, with just planks across (Forces privilege) and another one was going to Windsor castle dungeons and all, when the public were not allowed. I missed the Defence medal by one month and my officers were rather disappointed about that. We had a short stay at the Princess Elizabeth gun site in Windsor Great Park, and we used to see the Princesses o up and down in their pony cart until Princess Elizabeth joined the ATS herself.
