My first recollection of the war is someone shouting "Put that light out don't you know there 's a war on!!!" I also remember being in Sutton Park helping to fill sand bags at the age of 18. I became a children's nurse and I can recall the light bulbs being painted black to dim them, We knew it as the phoney war. It was all preparation for the real thing. I went on to be a general nurse. We had to learn how do do a firemans lift and also how tp put out incendary bombs.
