Me and my family were all evacuated except my father and my oldest brother. We lived near kennington, we were evacuated to Seaton in Devon. It was very nice but we were all split up, the family were quite well off and we had a wonderful time.
I however didnt go back during the lull but most of my family did. I stayed with the "foster parents" until the end of war. They were very nice and they wanted to adopt me, they were called Mr & Mrs Poore. My adoptive father was a bank clerk and eventually became a manager, mrs did tremendous work for the Womens voluntary service now know as WRVS. They also both worked for the Civil defense. They worked very hard for the cause and entertained the troop where the belonged to an entertainment concert parties. I used to go the parties where they entertained the troops, we used to get a petrol ration and go to villages outside of Devon. Children were encouraged to enterain and I started dancing and did ballet until I was 16.
Mr and Mrs Poore liased with my parents, they decided that having been there for five years it was better to stay than uproot me back to London and as they were a poor family with six children, My parents felt I would have a better chance! I was 11 at the time and didnt realise the consequences, as a result I had a good upbringing and education. I never spoke to my mum and dad again. I had a very happy five years with my family in London and still remember the names of my four brothers and two sisters. I was the youngest but one.
