I remember I was around six years old when the Second World War started. When the doodlebugs came over my mother put us, my two brothers and I, under the table which had a chenille tablecloth which reached down to the floor. On one occasion she threw herself on top of me on the bed, it was that close, and they dropped their bombs on a village nearby. It blew out all our doors and windows, we were very lucky. There was an army camp situated in that village and we thought they were trying to bomb the camp, which was full of young soldiers.
