May and I, Southampton 1947

May and I went back to my hometown of Southampton after the war. It had been bombed to the ground. Ernest Jones the biggest department store in Southampton had suffered a direct hit and had been obliterated, it has been replaced by Debenhams. It was in the winter that I returned and everything was covered in snow, and when you walked around what used to be the town; you had to be careful because you were walking on rubble or craters.
