Shelled when just moved into Cassino, wounded with shrapnel, and I was taken to the military hospital at Nocera in the back of a three tonner travlleing a pitted road, for an hour. Then from Nocera, after three weeks travelled by ambulance to Sorrento on the way down we pulled into a layby for a cup of tea, then the Big staff car pullled in and General Alexander got out and asked if we could spare a cup! We drank tea together and chatted he was brilliant.
We pulled into Sorrento and Vesuvious was puffing out smoke and by teatime, it was in full eruption and we had to walk around in masks to keep the volcanic ash out. Aftrewards we found out that the ash had fallen on the hospital at Nocera and 4 or 5 troops had been killed.
Once Vesuvious stopped erupting I was pulled out from Sorento, stayed in Italy a while then went onto stay three months in Greece, back into Italy for aprox 6 - 7 months then out to Palestine, for about three months and then back to Italy again, then to Austria, and I was demobbed from there in 1945.
