During one air raid a german bomber was shot down, and the pilot bailed out using his paracute. The airplane actually crashed at Hendon in Sunderland destroying a number of houses. Meanwhile the pilot attached to his parachute crashed in some tall tree's near where Southmoor School now stands. When daylight came, his dead body was found dangling in the trees. I didn't see this but my grandfather and grandma did! It was an awful sight.
