It was tea time when my 2 year old sister, mother and I (nearly 5)were sitting down to tea in the kitchen of our house in Hounslow West, which backed onto the grounds of Hounslow Barracks. My sister and I were facing each other and Mum was in the centre facing the wall when there was a great big bang and the house shook. A cloud of dust appeared (it was part of the ceiling) - it was then that I realised that Mum was not at the table and that the kitchen door was missing. I went out and found Mum lying in the garden. She told me to go and see if Sandra (my sister) was alright and to see if there was anyone in the road that could help. On going outside, all the houses on the other side of the road looked like pyramids and on looking at ours and next door they were also badly damaged, ours had lost its roof. Eventually some soldiers appeared and took us all to hospital. When we had all been treated we were taken to the soldiers' place (found out later that they were Canadians). The next day we were sent to our Gran's house in Edgware and stayed there long enough to be sent to school there - I suppose it must have been 2-3 weeks. Then Mum, Sandra and I were evacuated to Liverpool for about 6 months. During this time Sandra and I went into a children's home as Mum was pregnant and had to go into hospital to have the baby. The baby only lived for 3 days as it had received injuries when Mum was blown out of the house. We eventually returned from Liverpool and settled in Twickenham just before the war ended. We discovered afterwards that the bomb that had landed was a German V2 and it had landed just behind the houses opposite ours.
