It had been an exhausting and stressful night duty, my switchboard operates answering the many ‘lights’ at great speed and with great efficiency.
For my part as supervisor, working at a table adjacent to switchboards there were the usual queries and calls to deal with.
During the night- Private Membry removed her headset and came to the “table” and told me “Hull has been bombed by the Germans. What can I do? — my parents are there!” All I could suggest was that I would try t find someone to take her to Hull after night duty. The sergeant in charge of the pigeon loft opposite Tierergate House came to my rescue and said that as it happened he had to get some pigeons to Hull the next morning. Little Clarice (quite a character) was relieved but would Corporal Newman go with her!!!
Reluctantly I said yes. We were couped up in a very tiny Army Utility van designed only for pigeons!! Ah well. We reached Hull and Clarice’s parents were ok!
