That May the weather was lovely and warm. I lived in Akenside Street in Bootle. Landmines fell on the street and killed an elderly couple, Mr and Mrs Cullen, and their two daughters. Another neighbour Mrs Hartley and her little girl also died, along with a sister from Bulwer Street. Our neighbour鈥檚 husband was a prisoner of war, and later returned home and lived near Marsh Lane.
My brother, Danny, had a friend, John Ward. He and his parents were buried under their house. The ARP thought that no one could have survived, but Mr Ward鈥檚 brother grabbed a shovel and started digging. Others then joined in. They found John and his parents alive, but their baby had died. Sadly the blasts killed many of the every young and elderly.
