I was 10 years old and attending St Gerrards school, in Liverpool, but in 1939 found myself and sisters being vacuated to Shropshire. We went to Sandhills Station where all the mothers walked behind crying. I was told not to seperate from my sisters and was taken to a village hall where I was given a brown paper bag with rations to be given to the lady of the house in which we would be staying.
One of the things I remember about the war is mushrooms; I had never seen mushrooms before. They were cooked with bacon, and I have never tasted anything as good since. The people I was staying with, including the family's three children, also had a pump in the garden to get fresh water. Altogether, we were there for about a year,we didn't want to go back to Liverpool.
I was evacuated again in 1941, this time to Pennamaen in Wales and for two years. This was an emergency evacuation due to a nearby quarry bombing.
