I was born in 1936 and my father was a doctor in London but during the war he volunteered to be in the Royal Navy Reserve. I became obsessed with the war and eventually became a royal air force pilot and then an airline pilot and now I'm a private and a display pilot.

As a child during the war I spent every moment outside. There were dog flights all over the place all sorts of things fell from the sky. If an airplane crashed it was always the small boys that got their first -not the police!

One of these crafts a Meshersmitt 109E crashed on Foxborough farm in Kent. The pilot escaped but was captured. Around half a dozen boys were there within half an hour and we took bits from the plane. The police came knocking on the doors of boys known to collect souvenirs. So for years to come the only thing that ever scared me was the police coming to the door!
