As a 5 year old I remember the air raid warning siren sounding and my mother taking me downstairs to shelter under the stairs. My Aunt , who lived in Liverpool, was staying with us at the time, asked when would the guns start firing when we heard the German bombers flying overhead. My Mum said there were no guns, we made sure there were no lights showing and we would wait for the all clear to sound. My Aunt was very put out as no attempt was being made to shoot down the Germans as they made their way to Liverpool.
