This story was submitted to the People's War site by a volunteer from CSV/大象传媒 on behalf of Ozeas Vital and has been added to the site with his permission. Ozeas Vital fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

Monte Castelo was impossible to climb it is a huge mountain. American soldiers always wanted to climb up but they could not. German soldiers were shooting everybody it was impossible for them. The Brazilians didn鈥檛 want to become involved because of the politics, but they had spirit and a desire for freedom and to help people, so they fought. They were fighting in the winter and for people from a tropical country this was really hard, some had terrible frostbite on their toes.

When finally the Brazilian soldiers reached the top and the Germans told them to put their hands up, some American soldiers were shot at. The Brazilian soldiers made a line in front of the Germans and told them 鈥渋f you kill them you kill me鈥. When the veterans tell this story to young soldiers it is very moving; it is an amazing story. The war was a pointless thing; they could see that we are people, we are all the same, there was no reason for the fighting.
